Sonny Lee

As an artist, I found this project is unique and interesting to read about what people with LC were going through. Then from each story, what sounded important I used that as a key point to create my illustrations.

The experience with LC is a challenge, no different than being incarcerated. Having LC and being incarcerated are similar especially the resilience part. It doesn’t matter how bad the out come is, with Long Covid you have to find positive ways to keep moving and that is the same way in here. You have to think positive and continue to do what you need to do to live your life the best you can even with the many challenges that you may face on a daily basis.

I hope my illustrations articulate the stories as close as possible. So whatever the story is telling whether it is a lesson learned, struggles, lost, etc. hopefully the viewers (visitors) will be able to see and understand the message clearly.

Lee is a self-taught artist who works across many mediums—graphite pencil, ink, paint, and sculpture—depending on the message he wishes to convey. He’s drawn to realism and fantasy, and uses his art to inspire and uplift others; to offer motivation and meaning.

Painting gives Lee a sense of purpose. It helps him stay focused on his personal goals. Outside of his artwork, Lee is currently working toward a degree in psychology. His dream is to one day reunite with his family and make a positive impact in the community. He hopes viewers can observe this spirit in his artwork.
